October 6 - 8, 2002
The Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers (EACUBO) annual meeting provided a combination of excellent speakers, topical and interesting concurrent sessions, networking, and vendor exhibits.
During one session (Concurrent Session IV) of the meeting, Raymond Schmierer, assistant director, TIAA-CREF Institute, presented "The Impact of EGTRRA on 457(b) Plans for Private Institutions." This topic is of particular interest because, as a result of the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 (EGTRRA), 457(b) deferred compensation plans have become a popular tax savings vehicle for key employees at colleges, universities, and other organizations. Among their features, 457(b) plans will have the benefit of higher contribution limits, the elimination of the dollar offset between 403(b) plans and 457(b) plans, and new pension portability rules.
Mr. Schmierer’s presentation assisted institutions in their overall strategic planning on compensation issues through the examination of 457 plans and their role in executive compensation.
