July 26-29, 2003
The National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) annual meeting in 2003 assembled authoritative industry experts to show attendees how to develop innovative business practices and challenge them to constantly rethink and reengineer these practices, procedures, and strategies.
Through lively presentations, interactive sessions, and spirited discussions, this meeting showcased the following topics:
- Accounting and Finance
- Business Operations
- Policy Issues in Higher Education
- Institutional Effectiveness
- Technology
During one session of the meeting, John Ameriks, senior research fellow, TIAA-CREF Institute, took part in a presentation titled "Equity Markets and the Downturn: History, Impact and Case Study." Joining Dr. Ameriks in this presentation was Scott Budde and Brett Hammond, both of TIAA-CREF, and Connie Baskette of the University of Tennessee. During the rise of stocks and private equity markets in the 1990s, the use of defined contribution plans increased, as did the responsibility of individuals for their own retirement savings, which resulted in greater exposure to market forces. In recent years, equity market performances declined. This presentation addressed trends in pension coverage, provided a historical review of market performance, and examined the impact of the investment market downturn on individuals and institutions. A case study on strategies implemented by the University of Tennessee was also featured.
