NEW YORK, NY – November 5, 2009 – Today begins the TIAA-CREF Institute 2009 Higher Education Leadership Conference, “Smart Leadership in Difficult Times.”
Higher education leaders from across the country will share information to help identify opportunities for change, and best practices for navigating through a period of spending cuts, reduced revenue, and capital budget constraints.
Gergen, Ferguson keynotes look at causes of and responses to challenges
The opening keynote address will be delivered by David Gergen, Editor-at-Large for U.S. News and World Report and Senior Analyst for CNN. He will provide a contextual framework by laying out the larger global economic forces that have created many of the challenges facing higher education today. The day will conclude with remarks from Roger W. Ferguson, Jr., President and CEO, TIAA-CREF, outlining how TIAA-CREF is responding to these challenges and helping to shape the public policy debate in ways that serve the interests of TIAA-CREF clients.
Discussions explore changing expectations for higher education
“Bringing together thought leaders and other higher education experts at this annual conference is one way the TIAA-CREF Institute supports the ongoing vitality of our nation’s colleges and universities. TIAA-CREF Theodore M. Hesburgh Award winner recognized
Graham Spanier, President, The Pennsylvania State University, will be recognized by Ms. d’Ambrosio for winning the 2009 TIAA-CREF Theodore M. Hesburgh Award for Leadership Excellence. This award, presented annually by the TIAA-CREF Institute, recognizes a current college or university president or chancellor who embodies the spirit of Father Hesburgh, his commitment and contributions to higher education and society. Father Hesburgh, President Emeritus of the University of Notre Dame, served as a member of TIAA-CREF’s Board for more than 28 years.
Gee to address impactful leadership in higher education
The featured dinner speaker is Gordon Gee, President, The Ohio State University, who will share his insights and experiences based on positions of leadership in higher education at a broad range of institutional types.
