The opening keynote address will be delivered by David Gergen, Editor-at-Large for U.S. News and World Report and Senior Analyst for CNN. He will provide a contextual framework by laying out the larger global economic forces that have created many of the challenges facing higher education today. The day will conclude with remarks from Roger W. Ferguson, Jr., President and CEO, TIAA-CREF, outlining how TIAA-CREF is responding to these challenges and helping to shape the public policy debate in ways that serve the interests of TIAA-CREF clients.

Discussions explore changing expectations for higher education
“Bringing together thought leaders and other higher education experts at this annual conference is one way the TIAA-CREF Institute supports the ongoing vitality of our nation’s colleges and universities. Conference discussions will showcase the creative thinking and open mindedness that today’s higher education leaders need to help their institutions not only survive, but to thrive in this new environment,” said Madeleine d’Ambrosio, Vice President and Executive Director of the TIAA-CREF Institute.  “Participants will also explore evolving  expectations for higher education,  changing campus operating models, the economic outlook and its implications for colleges and universities, and new  avenues to success.”

Topics to be discussed throughout the day include:

  • What’s the New Normal? Higher Education for the 21st Century: Recognizing that the most successful institutions will not be those that ride out the economic downturn by returning to the status quo.
  • New Thinking: What Works? Some practical solutions and strategies highlighting creative approaches to the difficulties imposed by our troubled economy.
