It was announced Sunday, December 13, that famed economist and Nobel laureate Paul A. Samuelson died at age 94.

Professor Samuelson served as a Trustee for CREF from 1974 to 1985. In addition to his service to TIAA-CREF, Samuelson was professor emeritus of MIT’s economics department and wrote a ground-breaking textbook, “Economics: An Introductory Analysis,” which sold nearly four million copies and has been translated into 40 languages. He also advised Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.

Each year the TIAA-CREF Institute awards the Paul A. Samuelson Award in recognition of an outstanding research publication containing ideas that the public and private sectors can use to maintain and improve America’s lifelong financial wellbeing. “The TIAA-CREF Institute has been privileged to be associated with Professor Samuelson,” said Madeleine d’Ambrosio, Vice president and Executive Director of the TIAA-CREF Institute. “We are proud to continue to honor his legacy of advancing knowledge through this prestigious award.”
