TIAA-CREF Institute Introduces Periodical Focused on Strategic Issues for Higher Education Administration

New York, February 1, 2008 – TIAA-CREF Institute Executive Director Madeleine d’Ambrosio today announced a new TIAA-CREF Institute periodical entitled Advancing Higher Education, developed to provide research, analysis and critical information to support strategic planning and decision making about issues of importance to higher education. Written by campus leaders, higher education scholars, and TIAA-CREF Institute researchers, this publication will help to illuminate some of the most pressing issues confronting academic administrators today. Advancing Higher Education is part of the TIAA-CREF Institute Series on Higher Education, which includes books, DVDs, forums and other resources of value for those who work in or study higher education. “Our goal with this new periodical,” said Ms. d’Ambrosio, “is to facilitate the exchange and dissemination of best practices, innovative ideas, and subject matter expertise to help our nation’s colleges and universities succeed in an increasingly competitive environment.”

Each issue of Advancing Higher Education addresses a different topic, though sequential issues may explore multiple aspects of an overarching theme. Topics include institutional leadership development, managing the academic workforce, a variety of issues that affect institutions’ budgets and balance sheets, and other challenges and opportunities relevant to the mission of higher education in American society.

The first five issues released are:

• Generational Shockwaves: Implications for Higher Education by Donald Heller, Director, Center for the Study of Higher Education, The Pennsylvania State University and TIAA-CREF Institute Fellow

• Globalization of Higher Education by Charles Phelps, University Professor and Provost Emeritus, University of Rochester and TIAA-CREF Institute Fellow

• Financing Institutional Operations in Higher Education by James C. Hearn, Institute of Higher Education, University of Georgia and TIAA-CREF Institute Fellow

• Do Great Minds Think Alike? Faculty Perspectives on Career and Retirement by Paul J. Yakoboski, Principal Research Fellow, TIAA-CREF Institute

• Attracting and Developing the Next Generation of Senior Administrative Leadership by Herman Berliner, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Hofstra University and TIAA-CREF Institute Fellow

The publication is downloadable from the TIAA-CREF Institute web site, www.tiaa-crefinstitute.org.
