Managing Retirement in Higher Education
This report synthesizes research on retirement incentive programs offered by colleges and universities with survey data on faculty interest in such programs. The author presents the information with consideration of how the downturn in the financial markets may influence individual interest in incentive programs and how institutions might utilize them to help manage faculty retirement patterns.

Chief Academic Officers and the Future Leadership of Higher Education
In collaboration with the TIAA-CREF Institute, the American Council on Education (ACE) surveyed CAOs, often referred to as provosts, to gain a deeper understanding of the nature of this important position on campus, the individuals serving in this role, and the extent to which CAOs create the pipeline for future higher education presidencies. Managing Risk in a Market Meltdown
This report presents highlights from a TIAA-CREF Institute Fellows Symposium addressing the challenges raised by the dramatic drops in financial markets for both individuals and colleges and universities; in particular, issues related to risk management in individuals’ retirement portfolios and managing and facilitating employee retirements. A prevalent theme was the importance of presenting information in ways so that individuals have a fuller understanding of their choices, the potential outcomes, and likelihood of achieving goals.

Financial Literacy: Evidence and Implications for Financial Education
Are individuals well-equipped to make financial decisions, i.e., do they possess enough financial literacy to function effectively in today’s complex marketplace? New evidence finds that financial illiteracy is widespread, particularly among less educated, women and minorities. This report highlights the implications for saving, retirement planning, retirement well-being, mortgage holdings, and more, and it identifies a role for policymakers and employers working to boost financial literacy and education in support of lifelong financial security.

Does the Way Annuities Are Presented Impact Decisions about Their Use?
The authors present their findings that when products are presented in a way that emphasizes consumption consequences, 72% of survey respondents prefer a life annuity to a savings account. In contrast, when the same products are presented using investment terminology, only 21% of respondents prefer the annuity. The analysis of this data helps to explain why so few individuals annuitize and offers ideas for those who seek to increase consumer well-being via promoting wise financial choices.

America and the Rise of the Rest: The World According to Zakaria
This paper summarizes the opening keynote delivered by Fareed Zakaria, Editor of Newsweek International and CNN Host, at the 2008 TIAA-CREF Institute Higher Education Leadership Conference. Zakaria discussed how the US arrived at its present financial and geo-political position in today’s global environment, how the rest of the world is catching up to the west economically, and the role of higher education in helping the US to continue “moving up the value chain.”

In the current economic environment, discussions among campus leaders and business leaders are likely to turn to budget gaps, hiring freezes, and supporting ongoing operations while preserving future purchasing power. The financial challenges faced by our society are daunting, but should not obscure the critical need for a renewed investment in intellectual capital. The challenges serve to highlight the need for a renewed commitment to higher education in the US and around the world.

The TIAA-CREF Institute invites you to submit an entry. Submissions may be theoretical or empirical in nature, but must cover a subject directly relevant to lifelong financial security. The research must be in a book or article form and must have been published between January 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009. Generational Shockwaves – Implications for Higher Education
Part of the TIAA-CREF Institute Series on Higher Education, this book is based on the TIAA-CREF Institute 2007 Higher Education Leadership Conference.
