Managing Higher Education in Uncertain Economic Times
Read a summary of a dialogue among senior-level campus administrators, leading academic researchers studying higher education issues, and TIAA-CREF leadership focused on continuing to fulfill the mission of higher education during troubled economic times. Engaging New Hires to Invest in Their Financial Security
A TIAA-CREF Institute Fellows Symposium of senior-level higher education administrators, academic researchers, and TIAA-CREF leadership was convened to discuss the challenge of motivating new employees at colleges and universities to begin saving for retirement. This summary examines the new hire experience on campus; the latest thinking on how individuals make decisions and move to action; and best practices to engage new hires in saving for retirement. The Symposium reflected a range of perspectives, including those of the provost’s office; marketing, sociology, psychology, and human resources.

The Role of “Personality Type” in Motivating Women to Plan for Retirement
Focus group results provide suggestions for “messages” to help motivate retirement savings among baby boom-age women who reveal specific preferences or tendencies in terms of risk tolerance and savings-related behaviors. While surveys have compared genders with regard to financial planning attitudes and practices, women are not homogeneous and it can be helpful to consider differing personality types and how they affect retirement planning.

TIAA-CREF Institute in the News

"It's Time to Rethink Our Retirement Plans,"
The Wall Street Journal, November 13, 2008
Op-ed author, Roger Ferguson, Chairman and CEO of TIAA-CREF, asserts that the economic crisis presents an opportunity to bolster pensions and help more Americans achieve financial security. One suggestion is to automatically enroll employees in plans, then hiking savings with pay raises, an approach some higher education retirement plans follow. It may be one reason why 35% of faculty feel very confident in their retirement income prospects, compared with 25% of working Americans, according to a TIAA-CREF Institute study.
